Impacted teeth are teeth that haven’t grown into the mouth as expected and are stuck in the jaw bone. By opening the gums and attaching a bracket, we can move these teeth into the proper position for you.
Commonly impacted teeth include wisdom teeth, canines (“eye teeth”), and premolars (bicuspids). Wisdom teeth serve no purposes, so they are typically removed. Canines, premolars, and molars are more important to chewing and smiling.
Early detection of impacted teeth is essential, because they become difficult or impossible to move, with age. Orthodontists recommend a dental examination and panoramic x-ray at age seven, in order to count the adult teeth and identify any that haven’t erupted due to impaction.
